What is Dead Wood?
Dead Wood is where certain branches of a tree have died. Typical causes for Dead Wood can be down to disease, damaged roots that prevent nutrition or even lack of light through the crown, a more orthodox cause can be from natural ageing within the tree.
If a there are signs of Dead Wood on a tree, this doesn't mean that it is unhealthy or unwell, however if there appears to be a lot of Dead Wood within the canopy it could be a sign of internal health problems. If there is any doubt it's the wise thing to get the tree checked by a professional when convenient.
More often than not, it is not possible to remove all the deadwood from the tree. This usually results in a specific diameter being cut
Why Does Dead Wood Happen?
There are many reasons why deadwood occurs on a tree. When a tree begins to have an excess amount of branches, certain species will start to kill off lower branches, it can also happen due to lack of sunlight caused from the above crown.
Other species will have deadwood towards the middle of the tree, this is down to being more shade cast on them.
Should a tree be dismantled if there is a lot of Deadwood?
Some times excessive deadwood within the crown of a tree or towards the ends of the branches can indicate that there are other issues relating to the trees health. Large dead branches and lots of minor deadwood can be a good indicator of root problems such as honey fungus or Meriplieus.
