Crown Reducing

Crown reducing is where the tree surgeon removes a specific amount of the trees' branches in metres.

There are many benefits of Crown reduction, one being that it can help encourages new growth in a diminishing tree. It also help in preventing damage from storms or heavy winds.

The amount of Crown Reduction possible is based on the species of tree itself. Some Trees such as Sycamore, Willow and Ash trees are able to take more of a reduction without suffering any health issues, whereas species like Oak, Beech and Cherry trees will suffer and potentially die if pruned to extensively.

Crown Lifting

Crown lifting is where the lower branches of a tree and is measured in metres from ground level. Crown lifting usual purpose is to help increase light into a certain area, whether that is a property or public area. It other purpose is to allow better access for vehicles and pedestrians.

Crown Lifting should be restricted to less than 15% of the live crown height. The Crown should be left at least two thirds of the total height of the tree.

Crown Thinning

Crown Thinning is the process of removing selected secondary branches within the crown of the tree. This maintains the current shape and size of the crown while also increasing the amount of light transmitted through it.

Most crown thinning is measured with a percentage (of the initial crown). In some cases a group of branches may be removed which breaks up the shape of a certain tree, however this will no affect the overall size of the tree.

Felling or Dismantling

Tree Felling can be done in two ways. A single section felling or a piece by piece dismantling.

With a single section felling, the tree only has to be cut once, using a multitude of techniques to control the direction in which the tree falls. This procedure can only be performed if there is adequate space for the tree to fall, so the process doesn't get used often in a residential area.

When there is limited space for felling, a tree will be dismantled piece by piece. Three Shires' tree surgeons have good experience with a variety of closed spaced with difficult work areas, with specialised equipment and machinery.

Crown Cleaning and Pruning

When a tree grows, as it develops it can form a potentially dangerous shape. With this in mind, branches can begin to turn into deadwood due to ether disease or the tree not needing a use for them anymore.

When the branches of the tree aren't helping towards its structural integrity, these need to be identified and be careful removed. Branches that rub up against each other also need to be removed to prevent bark damage.

Pollarding

Pollarding consists of removing all of the branches and limbs of the tree, leaving just the trunk in place. In some cases certain limbs can be left on the tree to retain some rigidity.

A tree would need time to regrow before a process like pollarding can be repeated. If left unmanaged, trees can regrow irregularly and curse issues. A regular maintenance would be advised for future control
